Recent research reveals that Transylvania and Baku have emerged as unexpected travel destinations favored by British tourists this year. Apart from the mainstream choices, travelers are expressing interest in exploring less frequented locations such as Rovaniemi in Finland and Panama City. Surprisingly, Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, has also captured attention despite the political upheaval surrounding President Donald Trump’s statements about the region.
Leading the list is Sardinia in Italy, closely followed by Portugal’s Madeira and Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. The top 10 holiday destinations for the upcoming season also feature Lapland in Finland, traditionally known for winter visits, and Gozo, a serene island off the coast of Malta.
Renowned for its association with Count Dracula, Transylvania in Romania secures the 15th spot on the list. Meanwhile, Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, makes a noteworthy appearance in the top 30 destinations preferred by travelers.

This trend appears more pronounced among younger travelers, with 67% of Generation Z individuals (born between 1997 and 2012) specifically seeking offbeat destinations this year.
While many tourists are exploring hidden gems to maximize their budget, with 24% motivated by cost considerations to discover lesser-known locales, the study suggests that Brits prioritize enriching experiences over affordability.
Over 44% of respondents are opting for lesser-known destinations in pursuit of memorable adventures, while 38% are seeking fulfilling experiences rather than routine vacations.
Although half of the surveyed individuals prioritize overall cost when planning a trip, 80% emphasize the value of a holiday beyond monetary aspects, focusing on the experience, cultural immersion, and overall satisfaction.
Adam Bullock, the UK director at TopCashback, highlights the significance of finding value in travel experiences, noting that for many travelers, the worth of a holiday lies in the joy and lasting memories it brings rather than just seeking the cheapest deal.
