A dedicated football enthusiast from Britain has achieved a remarkable feat by attending every competitive match for Middlesbrough FC for nearly 30 years. Nick Waites, aged 64, recently celebrated his 1,400th consecutive game, a streak that commenced in September 1996 and encompasses various competitions including league fixtures, FA Cup matches, league cups, and European encounters.
Among the memorable moments in his football journey, Waites cherishes the 2-1 triumph against Bolton Wanderers in the Carling Cup final in 2004, which ended Middlesbrough’s lengthy 128-year trophy drought. His passion for the club stemmed from his late father, Stuart, an ardent Boro supporter, and his mother, Rita, who also shared his love for match days. Over the years, Waites has witnessed renowned players like Bryan Robson and Gazza, but his favorite remains the Brazilian standout Juninho.
Despite facing challenges, such as a hernia operation and a car accident, Waites has remained steadfast in his commitment. As a chartered accountant, he has even handled tax matters for prominent footballers and enjoyed hospitality at games. Reflecting on his impressive attendance record, Waites humorously mentioned how friends once joked about kidnapping him to break his streak.
Looking ahead, Waites ponders the possibility of reaching 1,500 consecutive games, acknowledging the evolving nature of the sport. The last league match he missed dates back to 1992 when Boro secured promotion to the inaugural Premier League on the same day as his brother’s wedding. During the recent pandemic restrictions, he had to forego attending matches until Middlesbrough’s FA Cup defeat to Fulham marked his latest milestone.
Describing his dedication as an “addiction,” Waites plans to continue his streak, having reached his 1,000th game milestone in 2016. Despite the challenges and near misses, his unwavering support for Middlesbrough FC remains a constant in his life.
