The widow of a courageous police officer who was tragically killed while on duty broke down in tears during the court appearance of the alleged perpetrator.
Stephanie Diller, the grieving wife, struggled to contain her emotions as the prosecution recounted how a bullet, reportedly fired by Guy Rivera, 35, fatally wounded her husband Jonathan Diller. The court proceedings in Queens, New York City, revealed distressing details of Mr. Diller’s injuries, including a severed artery.
Ms. Diller became visibly distressed, leaving the courtroom twice to compose herself, as the trial of Rivera for murder commenced. Jurors were shown harrowing bodycam footage of the incident in Far Rockaway, New York City, where Mr. Diller, 31, had stopped Rivera for a routine traffic check before the situation turned violent.
Prosecutor Ken Zawistouski stated that Rivera drew his weapon and shot Officer Diller at close range, causing severe internal injuries. The prosecution described how the bullet pierced through Mr. Diller’s abdomen, severing his iliac artery, one of the body’s critical blood vessels, before the officer managed to disarm his attacker.
Ms. Diller’s emotional turmoil intensified, prompting her to leave the courtroom again, as Mr. Zawistouski detailed how Rivera resorted to violence during the encounter on March 25, 2024, despite having the option to surrender peacefully.
The defense, however, contested the murder charges, with one of Rivera’s lawyers arguing that the New York Police Department, not their client, was to blame for Mr. Diller’s death. The defense claimed that a police sergeant caused an accidental discharge while handling Rivera, leading to the tragic outcome.
While prosecutors alleged that Rivera fired multiple shots at Officer Diller, striking him in the abdomen below his protective vest, the defense maintained their client’s innocence. The bodycam footage captured Mr. Diller, a father, crying out in pain after being shot.
Rivera, dressed in a distinctive pumpkin-colored suit and orange tie for the trial, sustained injuries during the incident. He denies the murder accusation as the trial in Queens progresses.
