A young child in Hull, East Yorkshire, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer after his mother noticed unusual blue veins on his chest. Louisa Shilleto, 37, became concerned during her toddler Charlie’s bath time routine. She and her husband, Lee, 39, discovered a lump under his arm, prompting them to seek immediate medical attention.
The family rushed Charlie to the hospital just before Christmas, where tests revealed a large tumor engulfing the left side of his chest. Specialists identified the diagnosis as stage four metastatic embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare soft tissue cancer known for its aggressiveness.
Louisa, a solicitor, recalled the moment she noticed the blue veins on Charlie’s chest, leading to the discovery of the alarming lump. Following a lengthy wait at the hospital, more lumps were found in Charlie’s neck, indicating the rapid progression of the disease affecting his lung.
Doctors swiftly initiated life-saving treatment, including chemotherapy, to combat the cancer. Despite the challenging road ahead, Charlie completed his initial round of chemotherapy and is currently undergoing the second phase. While the cancer has not spread to his bones, the family remains vigilant about potential relapses.
The intensive treatment regimen has visibly impacted Charlie, causing symptoms like nausea, mouth ulcers, and changes in his walking due to nerve-related drug effects. To support the family during this difficult time, a fundraiser initiated by Louisa’s sister-in-law has raised over £17,000, helping with travel expenses, living costs, and creating lasting memories with Charlie.
The outpouring of support has been overwhelming for the family, providing much-needed relief as they navigate through Charlie’s treatment journey.
