A young woman in Belgium had a frightening experience when she accidentally swallowed a 17cm-long spoon while eating yogurt. Reymy Amelinckx, 28, shared that the incident occurred as her energetic dog, Marley, unexpectedly jumped on her while she was seated on the couch. Despite attempting to remove the spoon manually, she found herself faced with a difficult choice between swallowing it or risking choking.
Reymy, who works as a medical representative, delayed seeking immediate medical help due to embarrassment but eventually rushed to the emergency room after realizing the severity of the situation. The spoon got stuck in her throat when Marley startled her as she was responding to a message with the spoon in her mouth.
Doctors informed her that the spoon was too large to pass naturally, requiring a gastroscopy procedure. During the two days before the removal, Reymy experienced discomfort, feeling the spoon moving in her stomach and having difficulty eating and sleeping. The utensil was successfully extracted under local anaesthetic, causing a small gastric haemorrhage during the process.
Following the procedure, Reymy’s recovery was relatively quick, with minor issues such as a sore throat, minor gastric bleeding incidents, and stomach sensitivity. Despite the ordeal, she decided to keep the spoon as a memento, with plans for her boyfriend to transform it into a unique piece of art.
Reflecting on her experience, Reymy advised others to be cautious while eating, especially around pets, and to avoid multitasking with utensils in their mouths. She emphasized the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if something is inadvertently swallowed, as embarrassment should not outweigh potential internal damage.
