An 84-year-old man, Anthony Singleton, has been sentenced to imprisonment for historic child sex crimes dating back over 50 years, all while allegedly pretending to have dementia.
The crimes, which occurred in the early 1970s when Singleton was in his 30s and residing in Essex, involved offenses against a young girl, starting when she was around ten years old. Although the victim reported the abuse to the authorities in 2017, legal proceedings were delayed for eight years due to concerns about Singleton’s mental capacity.
During the court hearings at Basildon Crown Court, it was revealed that a medical expert from the Crown Prosecution Service suspected that Singleton was exaggerating his dementia symptoms to avoid facing trial. Consequently, Singleton was found fit to stand trial and pleaded guilty to charges of indecency with a child and gross indecency.
Despite limitations on the sentencing powers available for historical child abuse cases, Judge Shane Collery KC handed down a sentence of one year and three months in prison, emphasizing the need for immediate custody as a deterrent to others.
As Singleton was escorted to begin his sentence, outcries of “rot in hell” echoed from the gallery. The victim, who had endured years of psychological trauma, expressed relief that justice had finally been served after a prolonged legal battle.
Singleton’s defense attorney acknowledged his client’s remorse for the crimes committed decades ago and highlighted his otherwise law-abiding life. However, Judge Collery reiterated the seriousness of the offenses and stressed the importance of accountability and punishment for such actions.
Following the sentencing, a friend of the victim voiced satisfaction that Singleton had been held accountable for his actions and encouraged other potential victims to come forward and seek justice.
