“Labour Affiliated Union Cuts £500K Support Over Bin Strike”

Date:

Unite, a major union connected to the Labour Party, is set to reduce its financial support by over £500,000 due to dissatisfaction with how the party managed the prolonged Birmingham bin strike. This decision precedes an upcoming conference where members will vote on maintaining ties with the party. The strike, ongoing for a year, protests proposed changes to the city’s refuse collection service.

Explaining the move, Unite disclosed a 40% reduction in affiliation, equivalent to £580,000, citing Labour’s actions against the Birmingham bin workers as unacceptable. This step reflects the frustration of union members towards the party’s conduct.

Unite’s General Secretary, Sharon Graham, emphasized the growing disillusionment among members with Labour’s stance. She highlighted concerns about Labour’s alignment with worker interests and urged the party to prioritize the needs of workers and communities.

In response, a Labour party spokesperson highlighted the party’s pride in its diverse funding sources, including dedicated members, affiliated supporters, trade unions, and donors. The party emphasized its commitment to enhancing workers’ rights, addressing issues like low pay and insecure work to benefit millions of workers nationwide.
