President Trump has launched a fresh assault on the ‘corrupt’ BBC, accusing them of misrepresenting his statements. Speaking at the Nation Republican Congressional Committee’s annual fundraising dinner in Washington D.C.’s Union Station, Trump referenced his lawsuit against the BBC, stating that they attributed false and harmful statements to him.
Trump claimed that the BBC manipulated his words, fabricating sentences and paragraphs that portrayed him in a negative light. He specifically mentioned a Panorama episode from 2024 that edited a clip of his speech on January 6, 2021, removing a crucial part where he advocated for a peaceful march to the Capitol.
The controversy surrounding the broadcast resulted in the resignations of BBC director general Tim Davie and BBC News chief Deborah Turness. Trump seized the opportunity to criticize the BBC for their alleged deceit, emphasizing that they admitted their guilt, showcasing their dishonesty.
Addressing the issue of ‘fake news,’ Trump asserted that other media outlets, including CBS, had also faced legal consequences for misrepresenting him. He highlighted a $38 million payment from CBS as a result of false claims made against him, insinuating a pattern of corruption in the media industry.
In response to Trump’s $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC, the broadcaster argued for its dismissal, citing lack of substantial claims for defamation and alleging a violation of a Florida unfair trade practices law. However, the US District Court Southern District of Florida, under Judge Roy K Altman, rejected the BBC’s attempts to dismiss the libel case and scheduled a trial for February 15 next year.
