Authorities have revealed that the individual responsible for a tragic school shooting in Canada, resulting in eight fatalities and over 25 injuries, had a history of mental health incidents at her residence.
The shooter, identified as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, was found deceased following the violent incident that claimed the lives of eight individuals in a remote area of British Columbia. Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed that the shooter, whose mother and stepbrother were also found deceased near the school, had prior interactions with law enforcement related to mental health concerns.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Initially reported as nine casualties, Commissioner McDonald clarified that eight individuals, along with the suspect who fatally shot herself, lost their lives. This discrepancy arose due to an injured victim who was mistakenly believed to be deceased after being airlifted to a medical facility.
In the small community of Tumbler Ridge, more than 25 people sustained injuries during the assault, including a 39-year-old teacher and five students aged between 12 and 13 years old.
Commissioner McDonald disclosed that the shooter’s 39-year-old mother and 11-year-old stepbrother were discovered at the suspect’s residence. The tragic events at the home preceded those at the school, with a young family member fleeing to a neighbor who promptly contacted the authorities.
At Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, one victim was located in a stairwell, while the remaining victims, as per McDonald’s statement, were found in the school’s library. Notably, the suspect had no known connection to any of the victims at the school.
Commissioner McDonald emphasized, “There is no evidence of specific targeting at this point.” Authorities recovered a long gun and a modified handgun from the scene. Upon receiving the initial call, officers arrived at the school within two minutes, encountering gunfire upon their arrival.
Expressing solidarity and condolences, Prime Minister Mark Carney, visibly moved, extended his support to the grieving community, stating, “Parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers in Tumbler Ridge will wake up without someone they love. The nation mourns with you, and Canada stands by you.” The town of Tumbler Ridge, with a population of 2,700 nestled in the Canadian Rockies, lies over 1,000km northeast of Vancouver near the provincial border with Alberta.
British Columbia Premier David Eby commended the prompt response of law enforcement, noting that police arrived at the school within two minutes. A video capturing students exiting the school with raised hands, surrounded by police vehicles and a circling helicopter, depicted the harrowing situation. Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka lamented the devastating loss in the tight-knit community, referring to it as a “big family.”
