Labour MP Andrew Gwynne, who was suspended from the party last year due to offensive messages in a WhatsApp group, has announced his decision to step down from the Commons citing medical reasons. This move opens the possibility for Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to potentially return to Westminster in a by-election.
There is speculation within the Labour Party that Burnham might stand in the by-election to challenge Keir Starmer’s position. However, approval from the National Executive Committee, which is seen as loyal to Starmer, would be necessary for Burnham to proceed.
Fire Brigades Union general secretary Steve Wright expressed concerns over any attempt to block Burnham from seeking selection as the Labour candidate in the by-election, calling it a “democratic outrage.” Meanwhile, Starmer refrained from commenting on whether he supported Burnham’s potential candidacy, emphasizing their past collaborations and stating that the decision would be made by the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee.
Gwynne, in his resignation statement, highlighted his decades-long tenure as an elected representative but mentioned significant health challenges during his time as an MP, exacerbated by the events of the past year. He has applied to vacate his seat through an archaic procedure and expressed well wishes to his successor in representing his constituency.
A Labour spokesperson expressed anticipation for the constituency of Gorton and Denton to have a new Labour MP soon, emphasizing the party’s commitment to addressing local issues such as the cost of living, NHS waiting lists, and fostering community investment and job creation.
