During their mission to the moon, NASA’s Artemis 2 crew encountered an issue with the spacecraft’s toilet system. Mission specialist Christina Koch noticed a fault light on the high-tech toilet shortly after liftoff from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The toilet shut down, prompting the crew to use a temporary handheld system while engineers addressed the problem.
NASA spokesperson Gary Jordan mentioned that the toilet fan was jammed, and ground teams were working on fixing it to ensure the toilet’s functionality for the mission. After troubleshooting, the Universal Waste Management System, valued at £22.6m, was restored to normal operation.
The crew, including Jeremy Hansen, expressed gratitude for having a private toilet space on the spacecraft. The essentials like the toilet, water dispenser, and life-support equipment are making their debut on the Artemis 2 Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion capsule, the first crewed lunar mission since 1972.
The capsule, housing Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen, is embarking on a 10-day, 600,000-mile journey around the Moon. They will practice docking maneuvers with the separated upper stage before heading towards the Moon using the spacecraft’s main engine.
Orion will reach its farthest point from Earth on flight day six, surpassing the distance record set by Apollo 13, before beginning its journey back for a scheduled splashdown on flight day 10.
