MP Karl Turner, a vocal Government critic, has had the Labour whip withdrawn by Chief Whip Jonathan Reynolds. Turner was reportedly suspended due to recent behavior issues, including making derogatory comments about fellow Labour MPs and displaying intimidating conduct in the Commons chamber.
Turner claimed he was not officially informed of the whip removal before it became public knowledge. He has been actively opposing the Government’s proposal to eliminate jury trials for certain offenses with shorter sentences, while also voicing increasing criticism of Keir Starmer and Downing Street.
Following controversy around the theft of a former chief of staff’s phone, Turner initially expressed doubt about the incident but later clarified his position, stating it was a mugging. He also referred to the staff member as a “lying b******” in an interview.
In the wake of Labour’s recent by-election defeat, Turner criticized the Prime Minister for preventing Andy Burnham from standing as the party’s candidate, attributing their current situation to this decision. Turner, a former shadow solicitor general, highlighted his personal experience with false accusations in the past to explain his strong opposition to proposed jury trial reforms.
In response to his suspension, Turner emphasized his commitment to upholding the importance of jury trials in the justice system and vowed to continue speaking out against perceived injustices. He expressed a desire to reconcile with his party and work towards improving the justice system under the Labour government.
The decision to suspend Turner is expected to undergo further review in the future.
