During a press conference, Farage expressed concerns over the security risks posed by individuals arriving in small boats and highlighted cultural differences, citing instances of sexual violence. Siobhan Whyte, whose daughter was tragically killed by a migrant, blamed the government for the incident.
Reform UK’s home affairs spokesman, Zia Yusuf, defended the refusal of reparations by pointing to Britain’s historical efforts in abolishing the slave trade. He pledged to implement measures that penalize countries advocating for restitution, including denying visas to individuals from those nations. Yusuf criticized countries demanding reparations, citing the significant number of visas issued and foreign aid provided by the UK to such nations over the past two decades.
Countries affected by slavery have long requested reparations, arguing that nations like the UK benefited economically from the trade while causing immense harm to their populations. The transatlantic slave trade, spanning from the 15th to the 19th centuries, saw millions of Africans enslaved and transported primarily to European colonies in the Americas, resulting in widespread suffering and economic exploitation.
Calls for reparations have gained traction globally, with organizations like the United Nations and the African Union advocating for acknowledgment and compensation for the historical injustices inflicted by the slave trade.
