A young man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison following a fatal head-on collision caused by his reckless speeding. Kiran Hanson, described as driving dangerously and carelessly by witnesses, lost control of the vehicle leading to the death of passenger Benn Johnson and severe injuries to his younger brother Finn.
Finn, who was present during the incident, recounted how he repeatedly urged Hanson to slow down before the tragic crash that took place on June 10, 2024. Hanson, now 21, was also banned from driving for 18 years as part of his punishment.
The devastated mother of Benn, Kathleen, expressed the profound grief caused by Hanson’s actions, stating that her son’s life was tragically cut short due to someone else’s thoughtlessness. Sarah Slater, the prosecutor, revealed that Hanson had been driving erratically and consuming alcohol and cannabis before the accident.
The court heard how Finn tried to reason with Hanson to drive responsibly but was ignored, leading to the fatal collision with another vehicle.
