If you have a booking with a UK or EU airline, or a carrier departing from these regions, they are obligated to ensure you reach your destination. However, you also have the option to request a refund and make alternative travel arrangements at a later date.
According to ABTA, airlines must make efforts to get you to your destination at the earliest opportunity if you accept an alternative route, typically within one to two days. If a different airline offers a quicker flight, you may have the right to be booked on that flight instead.
In case you need to make your own travel arrangements due to cancellations, keep receipts for reasonable costs. If the airline offers an alternative arrival airport, they should cover the transfer costs back to your original destination or a nearby agreed location.
It’s important to note that seeking reimbursement for self-made arrangements may take several months, depending on the airline. Maintain records and communication confirming the airline’s approval for booking the replacement flights.
For delayed or canceled flights, passengers are entitled to ‘care and assistance’ according to ABTA. This includes provisions like food and drink for shorter delays and accommodation for overnight stays. Costs incurred should be reasonable, with airlines covering basic necessities but not alcohol or extravagant meals.
Booking a package holiday can be advantageous in such situations, as tour operators often extend stays or arrange alternative accommodations for delayed passengers. They also tend to offer better customer support with on-site representatives available for assistance.
Review your travel insurance policy or contact your provider as you may be eligible for compensation depending on the delay duration and circumstances. Citizens Advice Bureau specifies criteria for flight compensation, emphasizing that airlines are unlikely to pay out for delays caused by extraordinary circumstances beyond their control.
In instances where airlines claim the crisis as beyond their control, passengers should refer to their travel insurance for potential coverage of incurred costs. Package holiday customers may have an edge in situations where missed days of the holiday cannot be refunded by the airline.
