A Russian soldier met his demise in a Ukrainian airstrike while wearing a peculiar penguin-like disguise on the battlefield. Images captured during Vladimir Putin’s invasion depicted a figure clumsily moving in a snowy landscape, donning a hooded, cloaked outfit with squared shoulders and a protruding “beak.”
The outfit, seemingly designed to evade drone detection, ultimately failed to shield the soldier from a swift attack by Ukrainian operators. Despite the thermal blocking cape leaving the soldier’s feet exposed, it did not prevent the lethal strike captured in a subsequent video.
Russian troops have been utilizing thermal “cloaks” to mask their body heat from Ukraine’s drone surveillance for nearly a year. However, due to technical flaws and inadequate training, these suits have inadvertently made soldiers easier targets by creating visible silhouettes against contrasting backgrounds.
Former British Army colonel and chemical weapons expert Hamish de Bretton-Gordon noted that these suits do not provide invisibility and actually increase soldiers’ visibility. Drones, responsible for the majority of casualties in the conflict, have hindered strategic advancements on both sides.
A recent intelligence report from a Latvian agency highlighted the significant role drones play in the conflict, causing a tactical deadlock and diminishing prospects for strategic progress. The report emphasized the importance of Western military support in determining the conflict’s outcome while cautioning about Russia’s potential drone mass-production plans in Belarus.
