Navy Diver Survives Shark Attack, Advocates for Conservation

Date:

A previous member of the Australian Navy diving team faced a sudden life-threatening situation during a standard training session when he was unexpectedly attacked by a shark. Paul de Gelder’s survival was attributed to his composure and refusal to succumb to the predator in Sydney Harbour, Australia.

The incident left de Gelder with severe injuries, describing the pain akin to being cut by multiple sharp blades. Despite the harrowing attack by a bull shark, resulting in the loss of his hand and leg, de Gelder managed to escape after an intense struggle underwater.

The bull shark, known as the third most dangerous shark globally, dragged him beneath the surface, causing excruciating pain and making it difficult for de Gelder to defend himself. Despite attempting to follow the guidelines he learned in school to deter shark attacks, de Gelder found himself helpless against the relentless predator.

Following a relentless struggle, de Gelder eventually broke free and sought refuge on a nearby safety boat. Through his military training, he managed to mitigate the bleeding from his injuries, with one Navy colleague saving his life by stemming the arterial bleed from his leg.

Reflecting on the traumatic experience, de Gelder expressed his initial fear of sharks but noted a remarkable shift in his perspective post-incident. Despite spending weeks in the hospital and enduring a challenging recovery, he returned to military training within six months and has since become an advocate for shark conservation, emphasizing their ecological significance.

Now residing in Los Angeles with his wife, de Gelder has embraced a newfound appreciation for sharks, advocating for their protection and coexistence with humans. He has transitioned from fearing sharks to understanding and respecting their role in marine ecosystems, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts.
