UK health authorities have issued a critical alert regarding a virus currently spreading in India. Estimates suggest that up to 75% of individuals infected with the Nipah virus could succumb to the illness. There is currently no established treatment or licensed vaccine for the Nipah virus, although research is ongoing.
The federal health ministry in India’s West Bengal state has confirmed two cases, leading to quarantine measures where nearly 200 contacts of the infected patients were isolated, according to local officials. Fortunately, all 200 individuals tested negative for the virus and showed no symptoms, resulting in containment of the outbreak for the time being.
Professor Paul Hunter, an expert in infectious diseases at the University of East Anglia, mentioned the challenges in detecting Nipah at borders due to the extended period it takes for symptoms to manifest. While several Asian countries have heightened health screenings and airport surveillance for travelers arriving from India, Prof Hunter stated that despite the severity of Nipah, the risk of widespread transmission is low.
It is reported that between 40 and 75% of Nipah virus-infected individuals may die, with survivors potentially facing long-term complications such as seizures and behavioral changes. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has labeled the disease as a high-priority pathogen due to its high fatality rate and the absence of approved vaccines or treatments.
Although the UK has not recorded any cases, Nipah virus has been previously identified in parts of Asia. The virus is known to spread from animals to humans and can also be transmitted through contaminated food or direct person-to-person contact. Fruit bats are carriers of the virus, and there is evidence suggesting it can infect various animals.
Symptoms of Nipah infection typically appear within four to 21 days after exposure, often starting with flu-like symptoms or fever. Respiratory issues and pneumonia may develop, with encephalitis or meningitis posing as severe complications associated with a high mortality rate.
Most infections are linked to the consumption of contaminated fruit or fruit juices, particularly fermented date palm juice, tainted with the secretions of infected fruit bats.
