An already incarcerated sex offender, serving a 16-year prison term for prior crimes, has been handed an additional 18-year sentence for the sexual abuse and rape of two children.
Paul Tyler, described as “Grotesque,” confessed to 11 new offenses following an extensive investigation spanning four years conducted by detectives from Humberside Police’s Protecting Vulnerable People Unit. The investigation was initiated when a man visited Bridlington Police Station in August 2022 and disclosed that Tyler had sexually assaulted him numerous times during his childhood.
Detectives conducted thorough inquiries into these historical sexual offenses, gathering witness testimonies, victim impact statements, and collaborating with other law enforcement agencies to build a case against the 66-year-old offender. The police praised the “extraordinary bravery” of those who came forward with information.
Tyler, previously residing in Scarborough, pleaded guilty to five counts of raping a boy under 13 and sexually assaulting another boy under 13 in December 2024. However, sentencing was postponed due to a report received a month earlier from a woman disclosing past sexual abuse as a child. Following an investigation, Tyler was charged and admitted to various offenses, including rape and sexual assault of a girl under 13, and causing a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activities.
Tyler, already serving a 16-year prison term imposed in 2012 for previous child sexual offenses, will now face an additional 18 years in prison for these latest crimes.
After Tyler’s court appearance at Hull Crown Court, Detective Constable Clare Gascoigne, the investigating officer, praised the courage of the individuals who reported Tyler’s offenses against them as children. Gascoigne highlighted the crucial role played by support services like The Blue Door, providing advocacy and specialist support to victims, empowering them to engage in legal proceedings.
Gascoigne emphasized the importance of reporting non-recent child sexual abuse, reassuring victims that such allegations are taken seriously, investigated thoroughly, and handled sensitively. She encouraged anyone who has experienced abuse, regardless of when it occurred, to come forward and seek support.
