An elderly man who claimed a lottery jackpot of £2.4 million concealed a large-scale criminal operation. John Eric Spiby, aged 80, was the leader of a significant drug enterprise rooted in his tranquil rural residence near Wigan, as revealed during the trial at Bolton Crown Court. Despite denying any involvement in the £288 million drug scheme, Spiby was convicted by the jury on charges of conspiring to manufacture and distribute class C drugs.
Having won the jackpot in 2010, Spiby played a key role in disseminating pills resembling diazepam, commonly known as Valium, a medication used for anxiety, seizures, and alcohol withdrawal. Testimony indicated that Spiby facilitated the establishment of drug production facilities by providing premises, aiding in modifications, and purchasing costly equipment.
The lottery winner was part of a group of four men, including his son John Colin Spiby, 37, who were identified by authorities as members of an organized crime syndicate engaged in large-scale drug manufacturing and firearm distribution.
Two other individuals, Lee Derury, 45, and Callum Dorian, 35, were also sentenced in connection with the criminal activities. Testimony revealed how Spiby Jr boasted in a group chat about their wealth, stating, “Elon [Musk] and Jeff [Bezos] best watch their backs.” The estimated street value of the illicit drugs reached £288 million.
Addressing Spiby during sentencing, Judge Clarke KC remarked, “Despite your lottery win, you persisted in criminal activities well into what should have been your retirement years.” Spiby was also found guilty of firearms possession, ammunition possession, and obstructing justice, resulting in a sentence of 16 years and six months.
In his defense of Spiby Sr, Adam Kent KC argued that Dorian played a central role in the operation and was the director of the drug empire, referring to Spiby Sr as the millionaire providing the operational space.
Kent highlighted the antique nature of the revolvers discovered at Spiby’s residence, dating back to the first world war. The judge, in his assessment of the trial, emphasized the extensive nature of the drug enterprise.
Describing it as the “largest drug production of this kind ever uncovered by law enforcement,” Judge Clarke pointed out the significant role played by Spiby Sr in the operation. Derury received a sentence of nine years and nine months, while Spiby Jr and Dorian were sentenced to nine years and 12 years, respectively.
