“Haunting Words Before Tragic Plane Crash: ‘The Fuselage Has Burst'”

Date:

A harrowing statement was made by a pilot just seconds before a tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of 346 individuals on March 3, 1974. This incident involved a Turkish Airlines flight that tragically went down near Paris, resulting in the loss of all passengers, including 177 British nationals.

The ill-fated journey was supposed to take off from Istanbul Yeşilköy Airport, make a brief stop at Orly Airport in Paris, and then continue to London Heathrow Airport. Shortly after departing from Paris and turning west towards Meaux, controllers detected pressurization and overspeed alerts on the aircraft.

Captain Nejat Berkoz’s haunting message, “the fuselage has burst,” sent shockwaves as the plane vanished from radar soon after. The wreckage was eventually located in the Ermenonville Forest, with six passengers discovered ejected over Saint-Pathus in a turnip field.

Of the total passengers, only 40 bodies were identifiable, leaving nine individuals unaccounted for. Investigations revealed that a failure in the rear cargo hold of the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 led to decompression, causing the cabin floor to give way, leading to the ejection of six passengers.

Among the victims were Robert Breton, Stephen Backhouse, Sidney Waterhouse, and Christopher Kendall, members of the Davenport Rugby Club from Stockport, Manchester, who were traveling to France for a rugby match. Sidney’s daughter, Louise, recalled the heart-wrenching moment she learned about her father’s fate and the subsequent tragic events that unfolded.

Following the crash, a mass burial was held for the victims, many of whom had been en route to witness a rugby match between England and France. Notably, the England rugby team narrowly escaped the tragedy by opting for a different flight. Although marked as one of the deadliest aviation disasters in history at the time, the Ermenonville air disaster remains the most fatal aviation crash in France, with haunting memories still vividly resonating within affected families and the aviation community.
