“Toxin Poisoning Cases in UK Children Spark Baby Formula Recalls”

Date:

The UK Health Security Agency reported 36 cases of children displaying symptoms consistent with toxin poisoning due to recent baby formula recalls. Notifications were received from various regions, including England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Crown Dependencies. The recalls were initiated by the Food Standards Agency earlier in the year over concerns of toxin contamination.

Nestle issued a recall of SMA infant formula batches in the UK on January 5 due to potential cereulide toxin presence, with updates on January 9. Danone also recalled Aptamil First Infant Formula on January 24 for cereulide contamination. A fresh recall was announced for Nestle baby formula this week after discovering a food poisoning toxin, arachidonic acid (ARA) oil, in the product, affecting specific batches distributed only in Northern Ireland.

Nestle stated no confirmed illnesses from the products but issued the recalls as a precautionary measure. The contamination stemmed from a shared supplier, prompting the FSA to advise discontinuing use of affected products, seeking alternatives, and consulting healthcare providers if infants had consumed the formula. Parents with prescribed formula were advised to consult professionals before switching. Further recall details are available on food.gov.uk.

The FSA emphasized caution, urging caregivers not to feed infants or young children with the affected products.
