British expatriates employed in Dubai have been requested to resume their work despite recent missile attacks from Iran.
British teachers at schools in Dubai were granted a temporary break due to the conflict. However, they are now expected to return to their teaching duties once the students are back. Some British residents in Dubai are now faced with the decision of either going back to the UK to seek new employment opportunities. A young teacher, who preferred not to disclose their identity, shared with the Mirror: “The end of the term was brought forward at the onset of the conflict.
“However, the end of the holiday period was also shifted to ensure uninterrupted lessons for the children. We are expected to resume work at the end of the break. Nevertheless, it poses a dilemma considering the current emergency situation. I am uncertain about what course of action to take.”
A female teacher from the UK, who recently started working in Dubai, expressed her reluctance to give up her job. She had to forego a planned holiday during the break and opted to return home to be with her family instead. She shared: “I incurred a significant loss on the holiday flights. My mother has been incredibly supportive and understanding following the air strikes. I believe she didn’t want to burden me with additional worries amidst the ongoing situation.
“However, I could sense her deep concern, which is understandable. I am hopeful that a system for online teaching could be established, allowing us to work remotely from the UK in the short term. The long-term prospects remain uncertain.”
Another couple with a young child had to seek refuge in their apartment’s basement near the location of the initial missile strike and resorted to living in their car for three days. The mother and child managed to evacuate, but the father remains in Dubai and is scheduled to return home over the weekend.
“The little boy returned home and inquired if he would have to go back to the basement,” a friend of the couple disclosed. “Fortunately, he is of an age where he might not retain this memory in the long run.”
British citizens are actively arranging their departure from the region. Flight schedules have been disrupted due to airspace restrictions and recent missile incidents. Tragically, a taxi driver lost his life when his vehicle was struck by debris in Dubai last week. Numerous Britons have opted to evacuate the area, with many enduring lengthy journeys by car or bus through the desert to neighboring Oman.
