A mother of three was caught smuggling cannabis worth £100,000 into the UK to finance her excessive spending on beauty treatments, a court revealed.
Nicole Hutchinson, 25, and Kia Underwood, 28, were apprehended at Manchester Airport upon their return from a seven-day trip to Thailand. Authorities discovered 48.75kg of cannabis in their suitcases.
During the court proceedings, it was disclosed that Hutchinson accepted £10,000 to transport the drugs to the UK. Despite financial struggles and a £10,000 debt, she prioritized beauty expenses like lip fillers, hair treatments, and eyelash extensions due to her fixation on appearance.
Hutchinson, residing in Bradford, confessed to drug smuggling but argued for a suspended sentence, claiming she was coerced by Underwood and another individual. She stated that she resorted to smuggling due to her mounting debt for basic utilities.
Her defense attorney highlighted her undiagnosed ADHD and anxiety, emphasizing her impulsive behavior. The court was informed that a friend had lured her with the promise of easy money, exploiting her impulsive tendencies.
Judge Alan Conrad KC remarked on the common tactic of enticing couriers with false promises of luxurious vacations and financial rewards for drug transportation. He acknowledged Hutchinson’s involvement under the influence of Underwood and others, citing a substantial financial gain from the operation.
Customs officers at the airport revealed that both Hutchinson and Underwood denied packing the suitcases, with Hutchinson checking them in. Upon inspection, Underwood’s suitcase contained 24kg of cannabis, while Hutchinson’s had 24.75kg.
Further investigations unveiled that Underwood had facilitated Hutchinson’s passport renewal and guided her actions leading up to the smuggling attempt.
The National Crime Agency uncovered the case through incriminating Snapchat messages between Underwood and an associate involved in drug trafficking. Underwood pleaded guilty to two counts of cannabis importation and received a prison sentence of three years and two months.
Hutchinson was sentenced to 23 months in jail, where she burst into tears in the courtroom and confronted one of her co-conspirators in a moment of distress.
