“British Tourists Warned About Canary Islands Amid Tourism Concerns”

Date:

A cautionary advisory has been released for British travelers planning to visit a popular Spanish vacation destination this summer.

The Canary Islands have been included in the Fodor ‘No List’ due to anti-tourism demonstrations, environmental issues, and beach pollution. In the first half of 2025, over 7.8 million tourists visited the island group, with more than 27 million airport passengers recorded.

Residents in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote have staged protests over the past two years against the large number of visitors that frequent the sunny and warm islands.

Fodor commented on the anti-tourism protests, stating that the surge in tourism, rising housing costs, and environmental strain are jeopardizing the essence of island life.

Concerns also arise from pollution, as a report revealed that the islands discharge a significant amount of untreated sewage daily into the surrounding sea, equivalent to 40 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Fodor emphasized that the travel list is not intended as a boycott but aims to draw attention to destinations where tourism is placing unsustainable pressures on the environment and local communities.

This advisory coincides with other travel alerts for British tourists planning trips abroad. The UK Government has updated its travel advice for various countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Lebanon, Palestine, and Qatar, in light of ongoing conflicts.

The government’s recent guidance includes information on entry into Egypt from Jordan, highlighting specific visa requirements for travelers planning extended stays or visiting locations beyond the Sinai Peninsula.
