Saltdean Lido, an iconic seaside lido in Brighton that faced the threat of being redeveloped into flats, has undergone a remarkable transformation and now welcomes dogs. Originally opened in 1937, the Art Deco pool had a turbulent history before being saved from closure and redevelopment thanks to a dedicated campaign.
Following an extensive £11 million restoration effort, the lido, now the UK’s sole Grade II* listed coastal lido, has retained many of its original 1930s features. The refurbishment included the revival of its café, library, ballroom, and offices, along with the addition of a 40-meter outdoor pool and various leisure spaces for activities like yoga, live music, and relaxation.
In addition to offering amenities like a gym, sauna, exercise classes, and event space rentals for weddings, the lido has introduced a unique concept called “Dogtember.” This initiative, held on selected weekends in early autumn, allows dog owners to enjoy swimming sessions with their pets in a gated area where dogs can roam freely without a leash.
The popular Dogtember events have drawn dog lovers from all over the UK to Brighton in previous years. This year’s sessions are scheduled for September 12 and 13, as well as October 3 and 4, with tickets expected to sell out quickly when they become available on May 1.
Funded by the National Lottery and community contributions, the lido’s impressive renovation has breathed new life into the historic site. Nestled just outside Brighton’s bustling city center, Saltdean offers a tranquil coastal village ambiance, with Saltdean Beach boasting picturesque shingle shores and majestic white cliffs, providing a serene contrast to the city’s urban beaches.
Visitors to Saltdean can explore nearby green spaces like Saltdean Park and venture into the scenic Sussex Downs countryside. The area features a quaint high street with independent shops, cozy tearooms, and spots to savor traditional fish and chips while taking in the seaside views.
