“Sister’s Murder Confession: Shocking Twist in Cold Case”

Date:

On March 11, 2011, Andy van den Hurk made a shocking revelation on his Facebook page, admitting to being involved in his sister’s murder. Sixteen years earlier, his step-sister Nicole, aged 15, went missing on her way to work at a shopping center in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Despite a search, her body was found a month later in a nearby forest, brutally stabbed.

The case of Nicole’s murder garnered national attention in the Netherlands, with widespread participation in the search for her and a large turnout at her funeral in 1995. Over the years, there were various developments in the investigation, including an individual detained for drug trafficking who claimed involvement in the crime but was not deemed credible by the police.

As interest in the cold case waned, Andy, residing in the UK, confessed to the murder, leading to his arrest and extradition to the Netherlands. However, he was released five days later due to lack of evidence. Andy later retracted his confession, stating his intention to obtain DNA evidence from Nicole, emphasizing his emotional connection to her.

In a turn of events in September 2011, police exhumed Nicole’s body and conducted a DNA test, revealing traces from two men, one being her former boyfriend and the other unidentified. The unknown DNA belonged to a 46-year-old man named Jos de G, a convicted rapist with a history of similar crimes. De G was eventually charged with the rape and murder of Nicole, but his defense argued the possibility of a consensual encounter.

Ultimately, de G’s charges were reduced to manslaughter, and despite a lengthy legal process, he was acquitted and sentenced to five years for rape. The Dutch Supreme Court upheld his sentence in June 2020, closing a chapter in the long-standing case.
