Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway has disclosed feeling “manipulated and deceived” by billionaire sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in a recent interview. During the interview on a Norwegian news program, she expressed regret over her association with Epstein after their friendship was brought to light.
The princess found her name mentioned in Epstein’s files, indicating a long-standing connection between them. In the emotional 20-minute interview at the royal residence in Skaugum, Mette-Marit, accompanied by Crown Prince Haakon, revealed her distress over the situation.
Reflecting on her past interactions with Epstein, Mette-Marit admitted to feeling unaware of his criminal history and regretted not investigating it further. She emphasized her wish to disassociate herself from Epstein and voiced support for his victims seeking justice.
Regarding a visit to Epstein’s home in Palm Beach in 2013, Mette-Marit shared about an unsettling incident that prompted her to contact her husband, Crown Prince Haakon. Despite feeling uneasy, she continued communication with Epstein for a period before cutting ties completely.
The princess’ decision to address the issue publicly follows mounting pressure and scrutiny, including from Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, concerning her extensive email exchanges with Epstein and her stay at his Florida residence.
Furthermore, the interview coincided with the conclusion of her son Marius Borg Høiby’s rape trial. While Marius denied the rape charges, he pleaded guilty to several other offenses. The royal family refrained from attending the court proceedings but expressed concern for all parties involved.
In a statement released ahead of the trial, the royal family conveyed empathy for those affected by the situation and emphasized that legal consequences should not be influenced by Marius’ royal status. If convicted, he could face a lengthy prison sentence.
