“Family Fights Demolition, Seeks Donation to Charity”

Date:

A couple who constructed a 6,220 square-foot residence is appealing to authorities to donate the property to a housing charity instead of demolishing it, as a local council initiates the demolition process.

Chris and Rose Murray built their expansive home at Faughan Hill, in Bohermeen, County Meath, Ireland in 2006 without the required planning permission from Meath County Council. Despite being denied permission, they proceeded to build a residence twice the size of the initially proposed property. Subsequently, the property faced several planning refusals and appeals.

After a prolonged legal battle, the council took ownership of the family home on Monday, and demolition commenced on Thursday despite objections from the owners, who are pursuing a human rights case.

Mrs. Murray expressed her distress on Monday, stating that she and her family were at risk of homelessness and pleaded for the house to be given to charity. The family, including their 19 and 24-year-old children, faced eviction abruptly, with Mrs. Murray highlighting the emotional distress of being forced out without essential belongings.

Despite acknowledging their wrongdoing in building the home illegally, the couple strongly opposed its demolition, advocating for its preservation and repurposing.

Despite legal efforts by the Murrays to halt the demolition, a High Court judge ruled on Thursday to proceed with the demolition orders, leading to the destruction of the residence on Friday morning by heavy machinery.

The demolition operation involved a security team comprising 13 vehicles, with Meath County Council confirming that they cooperated with family and community representatives on site, assisted by law enforcement, to facilitate the removal of personal items as mandated by the court.

A council spokesperson stated that, in compliance with existing court orders, the council, with the assistance of law enforcement, executed the demolition process and emphasized the ongoing legal nature of the matter, refraining from further comments.
