Iran has sent a stern warning that puts British lives at risk following a missile strike on a vital military compound it shares with the US. The country launched two missiles towards the base, aiming for a trajectory spanning over 2,000 miles into the Indian Ocean. Despite the attempt, both missiles failed to reach their target, with one malfunctioning and the other being intercepted by a US warship.
In response to the thwarted attack, Iran has issued threats towards the UK, cautioning that British lives are in jeopardy due to the government’s cooperation. The UK granted the US authorization to target Iranian missile sites focusing on the Strait of Hormuz, leading to a strong backlash from Iran, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi asserting their right to self-defense.
The escalation of tensions has seen Iran increase assaults on its Gulf neighbors while exerting control over shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump criticized the UK for delayed action in granting permissions. The pressure has extended to NATO allies, with Trump labeling them as “cowards” for not providing warships to reopen the strait. In a retaliatory move, an Iranian drone reportedly targeted RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus after the UK allowed US defensive operations from its bases.
The Ministry of Defence has denounced Iran’s aggressive actions, emphasizing the threat they pose to British interests and allies. The UK government clarified that British bases are being utilized for specific defensive purposes in coordination with US operations to neutralize missile threats. Diego Garcia, a key military location around 2,360 miles away from Iran, is pivotal in supporting US operations in the region.
Diego Garcia, strategically vital to the US, is set to have its sovereignty transferred to Mauritius while maintaining a leaseback arrangement. The island features crucial facilities such as a large airbase, fuel storage, radar systems, and a deep-water port, serving as a crucial hub for Middle East operations.
