“Trump Backtracks on Iran Attack Threat; Marines Deployed”

Date:

US President Donald Trump has retracted his threat to attack Iran’s energy facilities if it did not open the Strait of Hormuz by midnight on Monday. Trump stated that the US and Tehran engaged in discussions aiming to resolve hostilities in the Middle East, but Iran dismissed these claims as “fake news.”

Amidst the disagreement over Trump’s statements, 5,000 Marines are heading towards the Gulf, sparking concerns of a potential ground operation in Iran. Half of the troops are en route from San Diego, while the rest are aboard the USS Tripoli, coming from duties near Japan.

Trump announced on social media that productive talks had taken place with Iran for a comprehensive solution to the conflicts, leading him to delay any military strikes on Iranian facilities for five days. He emphasized the goal of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and mentioned ongoing negotiations, which Iran promptly denied.

Iran’s denial of negotiations was reaffirmed by Tehran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, who labeled Trump’s claims as “fake news” intended to manipulate markets. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also expressed skepticism about a swift resolution to the conflict.

The UK’s HMS Dragon destroyer, en route to safeguard British military bases in Cyprus, departed after an Iranian drone attack on the RAF Akrotiri air base. The death toll in the region has surpassed 1,500 in Iran, over 1,000 in Lebanon, 15 in Israel, and 13 US military personnel.

Civilian casualties continue to rise in the region, with millions displaced in Lebanon and Iran. Oil prices have surged to over $100 per barrel, while US gasoline prices have spiked to nearly $4 per gallon.

Trump hinted at the possibility of reaching a deal with Iran, emphasizing the retrieval of enriched uranium and the cessation of Iran’s nuclear capabilities. He disclosed ongoing talks led by his special envoy and son-in-law, with plans for further discussions but clarified that no direct communication with Iran’s Supreme Leader had occurred.

Conflict between Hezbollah and Israeli forces along the border persists, with clashes escalating following Israel’s incursion into southern Lebanon.
