Vladimir Putin has initiated significant new attacks on Ukraine, leading NATO to deploy warplanes from two European allied countries in response. The Kremlin issued a warning to Britain regarding the Ukrainian armed forces’ use of UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles to target Russian territory.
In retaliation, Putin launched deadly missile and drone strikes aimed at civilians in Ukraine following a severe blow to Russia’s energy supplies and exports by Ukraine. The Ukrainian strike on Russia’s largest port, Primorsk, caused extensive damage, with the facility still burning today.
The disruption of this crucial export center on the Baltic Sea represents a significant setback for Russia and its maritime operations, especially as US oil sanctions are being eased amidst the Iran crisis. The recent series of attacks involved T-95MS and Tu-160MS strategic bombers targeting Ukraine, prompting NATO fighter jets to scramble in Poland.
In response to the Russian airstrikes on Ukrainian territory, Polish and allied air forces have intensified their operations, with fighters, early warning aircraft, and ground-based air defense systems all on high alert. Additionally, two F-16 supersonic multirole fighters were dispatched from NATO member Romania to counter Russian drone attacks along the Ukraine-Romania border.
A total of 34 missiles struck Ukraine, with 25 intercepted by air defense systems. The country also faced 426 drone attacks, of which 365 were neutralized. Tragic casualties were reported in various Ukrainian cities, including Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Kharkiv.
Meanwhile, Russia’s ambassador to London, Andrey Kelin, issued stern warnings about the consequences of using Storm Shadow missiles, citing recent damages to a Russian microelectronics plant. He emphasized the UK’s role in providing these missiles and its ambitions to assert leadership in anti-Russian actions.
Kelin also criticized Britain for showcasing its military capabilities amidst global tensions, cautioning that actions have repercussions for all involved. The situation remains tense as both sides navigate the escalating conflict.
