A prominent airline has been compelled to halt all flights after entering administration.
Smartlynx Airlines, operational since 1992, was forced to discontinue operations due to financial struggles starting in the fall of 2025.
Following unsuccessful attempts to rescue the company, all aircraft were grounded. The Latvia-based airline was known for providing services to European carriers like easyJet, with the planes being branded by the respective carriers. It had also expanded its operations to India in recent times.
The airline saw a significant expansion in its fleet size from 2023 to 2024 to meet the growing demand, serving over 10 million passengers in a year. It offered services to clients such as IndiGo, AnadoluJet of Turkish Airlines, AirTransat, DHL, and others through tailored ACMI and charter services.
However, on November 24, 2025, the airline announced the cessation of all operations, leaving behind a debt of £206 million and unpaid taxes totaling £433,000 owed to the Latvian government.
This closure marked the end of one of Europe’s long-standing wet-lease and charter providers after three decades in the industry.
In a statement, the airline mentioned, “This decision was made after a comprehensive evaluation of our circumstances and long-term prospects, and it was not made lightly.
“We began as a small Latvian airline with ambitious goals, and over 33 years, we evolved into an international entity known for our resilience, versatility, and unwavering spirit.”
Acknowledging the legacy left behind, the airline expressed gratitude to its numerous colleagues, as reported by Express. It stated, “SmartLynx has always been shaped by its workforce – dedicated professionals from around the globe who faced every challenge with resolve.
“Together, we have filled the past three decades with unforgettable moments: days and nights in the skies, flights across the world, establishment of new bases, formation of new teams, and countless special memories.
“These moments, crafted by thousands of committed colleagues over three decades, embody the true essence of SmartLynx. To our teams, partners, clients, and friends – thank you.”
