Obama Condemns Trump’s Racist Video, Calls for Decency

Date:

Former President Barack Obama spoke out after a controversial racist video featuring him and Michelle Obama was shared by Donald Trump. Obama criticized Trump’s actions, highlighting the loss of decency and decorum in US politics. Trump posted the offensive video on social media, depicting the Obamas as primates in a jungle, which he later deleted without issuing an apology, instead blaming a staff member.

During an interview with podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen, Obama condemned the current political climate, referring to it as a “clown show.” He emphasized that most Americans find such behavior troubling and emphasized the importance of decency and kindness, values he believes are still upheld by many across the country.

Obama expressed concern over the lack of shame and respect for the office of the presidency displayed by those engaging in divisive rhetoric on social media and television. Despite previous instances where the White House and Republicans defended Trump, criticism emerged from within the Republican Party regarding the racist video. Senators Tim Scott, Roger Wicker, and Pete Ricketts denounced the video as racist and unacceptable, calling for its removal and an apology from President Trump.

The video was part of a series of posts where Trump perpetuated baseless claims of election fraud. Trump’s history of using inflammatory and racist language against Obama was also highlighted, including false claims about Obama’s birthplace.
