A young woman who has a sun allergy shared her experiences with the rapid onset of severe symptoms from exposure to UV rays. Jennifer Broyden, 24, suffers from an autoimmune disease that causes her skin to burn, blister, and even peel off within as little as 15 seconds of being in the sun.
Jennifer, a master’s student, developed this condition as a side effect of her dermatomyositis, a rare autoimmune disease that affects muscles and skin. Her extreme photosensitivity makes sun exposure unbearable, leading to symptoms such as muscle weakness, rashes, and fatigue.
