A mother from the UK, Amy Spooner, wrote messages of apology and love on a whiteboard in a hospital before her passing, as revealed in an inquest. Amy suffered severe injuries after falling from her third-floor flat in a tragic incident in May 2023. The 31-year-old teacher, who had a six-year-old son, spent an extended period in a Bangkok hospital before entering a coma and facing the decision of life support withdrawal.
During the inquest at South London Coroners’ Court in Croydon, it was disclosed that Amy had lived in China, Malaysia, and Thailand before returning to London in 2017 to marry her husband. Her mother recounted receiving a concerning call from Amy in Thailand, leading to the discovery of her fall from the high-rise flat. Amy was initially treated for her injuries in a local hospital before being transferred to specialized care at Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok.
Despite showing signs of improvement and undergoing surgeries, Amy eventually slipped into a coma from which she could not be revived. Her family was faced with the difficult choice of discontinuing life support, and she passed away on June 29, 2023. The coroner noted the lack of detailed information from Thai authorities regarding the circumstances of Amy’s fall.
Following a post mortem examination in Thailand, a second examination in the UK revealed the extent of Amy’s injuries, including fractures and scars. The cause of death was determined to be consistent with injuries sustained from the fall. A fundraising effort successfully gathered funds to repatriate Amy’s body, providing support to her grieving family.
The tragic incident led to an outpouring of support, with a JustGiving campaign helping cover funeral expenses and the repatriation process. The conclusion of accidental death was recorded by the coroner, marking the end of a heartbreaking chapter for Amy’s loved ones.
