A British father underwent a distressing incident during a vacation in Mexico, where his eyeball was injured by a stranger’s fingernail while playing volleyball with his children at a hotel pool. Lee Cuthbert, 46, was left with a severe eye injury, causing his wife Rachael, 41, to be shocked and worried. The injury, sustained when another player accidentally scratched his eye while reaching for the ball, led to significant damage, prompting immediate medical attention.
Following the incident in October 2017, a nearby nurse advised the family to seek urgent medical care. Rachael stayed with their children while Lee’s parents took him to the hospital. Upon his return the next day, it became evident that Lee had suffered a critical injury, with his eye requiring extensive treatment. Despite initial efforts to repair the damage, Lee eventually lost vision in that eye, necessitating further medical procedures.
The family’s holiday was abruptly cut short, with Lee experiencing challenges in daily tasks due to impaired vision. A year later, he underwent a procedure to replace part of his eye with a prosthetic, alleviating some of his anxiety about his appearance. The family received financial support from their insurer and has gradually adapted to their new circumstances, with Lee showing resilience and returning to activities he enjoys, such as swimming and water sports.
