A tragic speedboat accident resulted in the death of six tourists when the boat collided with a pier during the night. The passengers, who had just left a floating bar, were en route to a nearby ranch when the crash occurred due to the boat operator’s failure to see the unlit pier in the darkness.
Among the 15 people onboard, six lost their lives, including a mother and her son who tragically died on her birthday. The group of revelers, all from Franca in São Paulo State, Brazil, were thrown into the Rio Grande river on the night of February 21.
Reports indicated that several individuals were trapped under the boat’s heavy hull. While six people, including a five-year-old child, perished, nine others managed to survive. Local residents assisted the survivors before emergency services arrived to provide medical attention.
According to the Sacramento Fire Department, only three of the occupants were wearing life jackets, and the boat’s skipper did not possess a valid operating license. The victims were identified as Viviane Aparecida Aredes and her son Bento Aredes Ferreira, Marina Rodrigues Matias, Juliana Fernanda de Oliveira Silva Ferreira, Erica Fernanda Leal Lima, and Wesley Carlos da Costa, who was piloting the boat during the incident.
It remains uncertain whether the victims died from the impact of the crash or from drowning. An investigation into the fatal accident is currently underway.
