Billionaire entrepreneur Mike Ashley’s retail conglomerate has acquired two discount shopping villages to expand its growing property portfolio. Frasers Group revealed the purchase of the York Designer Outlet and the East Midlands Designer Outlet, popular destinations attracting nearly 7.8 million shoppers annually. While the exact deal value remains undisclosed, estimates suggest it could be in the vicinity of £400 million.
Frasers Group, renowned for its ownership of various retail brands like Sports Direct, Flannels, and House of Fraser, has been steadily increasing its presence in the shopping center market nationwide. Michael Murray, the son-in-law of tycoon Mr. Ashley and CEO of Frasers Group, expressed the company’s ambition to further solidify its position in the UK outlet market.
This recent acquisition follows Frasers’ previous purchase of the Swindon Designer Outlet last December and the Braehead Shopping Centre in Scotland for approximately £220 million last November. Frasers Group also holds properties such as the Princesshay Shopping Centre, Fremlin Park Shopping Centre, and The Olympus Centre, among others, emphasizing its commitment to property investment as a core element of its business strategy.
The York Designer Outlet spans 250,000 square feet and houses over 120 retailers, including popular brands like Marks & Spencer, Superdry, Adidas, and Boss, drawing in 4.3 million visitors yearly. On the other hand, the East Midlands Designer Outlet, covering 170,000 square feet and featuring over 65 designer brands, sees around 3.5 million visitors annually.
Mr. Murray highlighted the strategic significance of these acquisitions in enhancing partnerships with global brands and driving mutual growth. With Mike Ashley’s entrepreneurial journey starting over three decades ago in Maidenhead, Berkshire, the Frasers Group now stands as a retail powerhouse with a substantial market value, an extensive store network, a vast workforce, and a global presence.
