“Farage Concedes on Two-Child Benefit Cap Reversal”

Date:

Nigel Farage expressed frustration, stating that intelligence doesn’t always prevail, following criticism of Reform’s stance on the two-child benefit cap. In a radio interview, Farage defended his initial call to eliminate the cap but later conceded to pressure labeling him as too focused on welfare, citing the challenges of supporting families in contemporary Britain.

In a surprising turn, Reform MPs upheld the cap in February, contradicting Farage’s previous endorsement of its removal. The party now intends to reintroduce the controversial policy, which limits benefits for families with more than two children, if it gains power.

Labour’s decision to abolish the Tory-era restriction is expected to uplift nearly 500,000 children out of poverty. Addressing his party’s stance, Farage admitted his error, stating his intention to support tax credits for working families with more children was misconstrued, leading to accusations of being overly welfare-oriented.

Despite his about-face, Farage maintained that opposing the cap was the right choice, even though he would reinstate it as Prime Minister. When questioned if he regretted his position, Farage emphasized that being nuanced or clever was ineffective, particularly in advocating for pro-family policies in the current climate.

Asked about his defeat, Farage attributed it to widespread public opinion and media influence, rather than specific individuals. When pressed on why he did not stand firm, considering his influential role, Farage explained the need to prioritize battles and move on from misunderstood initiatives.

The vote in February to eliminate the cap, with a significant majority of 458-104, showcased a shift in policy despite resistance from Reform and Kemi Badenoch’s Conservative faction. Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Pat McFadden, emphasized the transformative impact on children’s lives, aiming to provide every child with equal opportunities for success and well-being.
