A well-known airline is expected to cancel over 500 flights in the upcoming weeks. Aer Lingus has stated that the cancellations are necessary due to mandatory maintenance on their aircraft. Internal documents from Aer Lingus reveal that flights from Dublin, Shannon, and Cork airports in Ireland will be affected.
Departures from Dublin to various European destinations such as Berlin, Zurich, Athens, Faro, and Amsterdam will be removed from the schedule on different dates in the coming weeks. Additionally, busy routes to London Heathrow, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, and Edinburgh are also facing cancellations. Passengers impacted by the cancellations will be rebooked on alternative services.
Transatlantic routes to and from Seattle, San Francisco, Minneapolis-St Paul, and Toronto will also experience disruptions, according to the documents. An Aer Lingus spokesperson mentioned that the airline has started operating its planned summer schedule, and the recent cancellations are primarily due to mandatory aircraft maintenance and some schedule adjustments, with most affected customers being reaccommodated on the same day.
These cancellations come amidst concerns about Europe’s jet fuel supply. The disruption in essential supplies through the Strait of Hormuz has led to what the International Energy Agency Executive Director described as the largest energy crisis ever faced. This situation is expected to have significant implications for the global economy, resulting in higher petrol, gas, and electricity prices.
If the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, flight cancellations due to jet fuel shortages may become a reality. Ryanair’s chief, Michael O’Leary, also warned about potential flight cancellations this summer due to the escalating cost of jet fuel. He suggested that passengers blame external factors like geopolitical issues rather than the airlines for any flight disruptions.
