Eight children, ranging from one to 14 years old, tragically lost their lives when a gunman carried out a deadly shooting at two residences in Louisiana. The devastating incident occurred in the Cedar Grove neighborhood of Shreveport early Sunday morning, where the assailant, identified as an adult male, shot a total of 10 people in what authorities believe stemmed from a domestic dispute. After the shooting, the gunman fled the scene in a stolen vehicle but was later confronted by police and fatally shot during a pursuit in Bossier Parish.
Reports indicate that two women sustained gunshot wounds to the head, and a young boy was injured while attempting to escape by jumping from a roof. The identities of the victims and the shooter have not been disclosed yet, although authorities revealed that some of the deceased children were related to the gunman.
The initial shooting transpired inside a residence on West 79th Street near Linwood Avenue, with a significant police presence remaining at the location hours later. Additional related shooting scenes were identified on Harrison Street and Brompton Lane in Bossier Parish, with officials working to gather more information about the multiple crime scenes. Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith described the situation as unprecedented and overwhelming for the community.
Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event, labeling it as one of the city’s most devastating incidents in recent history. He emphasized the widespread impact on families, law enforcement, and the entire community, calling for unity in mourning the loss.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry conveyed his heartfelt condolences and support to those affected by the tragedy, acknowledging the efforts of first responders and law enforcement in managing the crisis. House Speaker Mike Johnson echoed similar sentiments, describing the shooting as a heartbreaking tragedy and offering prayers for the victims and their families.
Authorities confirmed that no officers were harmed during the pursuit of the gunman, with the Louisiana State Police taking the lead in the investigation at the request of the Shreveport Police Department.
