A delivery driver caused a train to collide with a van at a level crossing in Cumbria. Despite the impact at 49mph, the driver, William Backhouse, emerged unharmed. The incident occurred at Braystone Station, where the driver failed to notice the oncoming train.
Video footage captured the train crashing into the Ford Transit, causing significant damage to the van and scattering debris on the tracks and road. The railway line had to be closed for several hours to clear the wreckage. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from the crash that took place on September 13.
Following the incident, Backhouse faced charges of dangerous driving and endangering railway passengers. Recently, he was convicted of both charges and received an eight-month suspended prison sentence at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court. Additionally, he was banned from driving for a year and required to undergo a mental health treatment program for 12 months. He also had to pay £1,500 in compensation.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Backhouse manually opened the level crossing gates without seeking permission to cross. The train, carrying 10 passengers, managed to stop using emergency brakes to avoid a more severe collision.
British Transport Police emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols at level crossings and urged the public to report any violations promptly. Network Rail expressed concerns over the reckless behavior that not only endangers lives but also disrupts railway operations and incurs significant costs to taxpayers. Efforts will continue to ensure level crossings are managed safely to prevent such incidents in the future.
