Former President Donald Trump has commented on the situation where the vice president was evacuated before him during an incident with gunshots at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Trump stated that he was eager to understand the situation and see what was happening. He appeared on 60 Minutes with CBS News’s Norah O’Donnell and recounted being led to safety after JD Vance.
O’Donnell pointed out that the vice president had left about 30 seconds before Trump, with Secret Service agents surrounding and guiding Trump to safety. Trump mentioned that he wanted to assess the situation despite video evidence showing him on the ground during the incident.
Footage shared online depicted the chaos as guests took cover under tables while Secret Service agents hurried to evacuate key officials from the ballroom. Trump acknowledged that his actions may have delayed the response slightly, as he hesitated before following instructions to get down on the floor for safety.
The individual accused of attempting to breach the ballroom, Cole Allen, had traveled across the country carrying firearms and knives, allegedly targeting President Donald Trump and other high-ranking administration members. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche disclosed that Allen’s attempt to enter the Washington Hilton ballroom led to a confrontation where shots were fired, resulting in his apprehension.
