“19th-Century Wine Cellar Unearthed on UK Golf Course”

Date:

A sinkhole unexpectedly emerged at the 13th hole of a golf course in the UK, revealing a hidden secret that had been buried for centuries. Greenkeeper Steve Hopkins was astonished when he looked into the hole at Davyhulme Park Golf Club in Trafford, Greater Manchester, and discovered a 19th-century wine cellar filled with numerous bottles of wine, champagne, and port.

Known as “the Cellars,” the 13th hole hinted at the existence of this long-lost secret. The wine cellar originated from the era of Davyhulme Hall, which was demolished in 1888 due to lack of buyers.

According to senior University of Manchester history lecturer Dr. Charles Insley, there is a possibility that the bottles were once consumed during the manor’s destruction. Club Professional Martyn Hamer, as reported by The Sun, described the excitement of finding the cellar, noting that despite the bottles being empty, it was clear that people in the past had enjoyed themselves.

The golf club, established in the 1860s and believed to be the fourth oldest in England, expressed amazement at the discovery. The club emphasized the need to ensure the safety of the area surrounding the cellar while considering potential future uses, such as creating a feature or displaying the bottles in the clubhouse.

As the investigation continues, the golf club remains committed to keeping the public informed about the progress and potential plans for the historic find.
