“Covid Lockdowns Impact Children’s Behavior Regulation”

Date:

A recent study reveals that children in reception year experienced disruptions in their ability to regulate behavior during the Covid-19 lockdowns. Researchers examining the impact of the pandemic on British children discovered that their capacity to maintain focus and adapt to new situations was hindered. The study assessed the skills of children, with the most significant effects observed in those who were in reception at the onset of the initial lockdowns. This stage is crucial for young learners to develop social skills, adhere to routines, and navigate the classroom environment.

Comparatively, children who were in preschool when the pandemic began exhibited more growth in their emotional regulation and adaptive abilities. The study, conducted by the University of East Anglia, suggests that these reception children may still be experiencing repercussions years later. Lead researcher Prof John Spencer highlighted that children in reception during the lockdowns displayed slower progress in key self-regulation and cognitive flexibility skills over subsequent years, unlike those who were in preschool.

The researchers were already conducting a long-term study tracking children from toddlerhood to early school years when the pandemic struck. By using the Minnesota Executive Function Scale, they measured cognitive skills at regular intervals. The findings indicated that reception pupils lagged behind and had difficulty catching up. Prof Spencer emphasized the critical nature of the reception year for peer socialization and confidence-building through early friendships, aspects that were compromised due to the closure of classrooms and limited social interactions in 2020.

The study, published in the journal Child Development, was a collaborative effort between the University of East Anglia, Lancaster University, and Durham University.
