Trump Fires Homeland Security Secretary Noem, Taps Mullin

Date:

Donald Trump has dismissed Kristi Noem from her position as Homeland Security Secretary, marking a significant setback for his deportation initiatives. The President announced on social media that he intends to replace Noem with Oklahoma Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin. This decision comes after Noem faced scrutiny from both Republican and Democratic members during a hearing on Capitol Hill. Trump plans to appoint Noem as a “Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas,” a new security program focusing on the Western Hemisphere.

Noem’s exit makes her the first Cabinet secretary to depart during Trump’s second term. Her tenure was marked by controversy surrounding immigration enforcement strategies, leading to protests and legal challenges. Allegations of an extramarital affair with aide Corey Lewandowski further tarnished her reputation, despite denials from both parties.

Criticism also mounted over the deaths of protesters Renee Good and Alex Pretti at the hands of ICE agents during Noem’s oversight of immigration enforcement in Minnesota earlier this year. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding the department’s allocation and utilization of funds approved by Congress.

Noem faced backlash for her handling of the administration’s immigration policies, especially in the aftermath of the Minneapolis shootings. She encountered criticism from lawmakers across party lines for her management of disaster response efforts. Questions were also raised about the pace of emergency funding distribution and the overall disaster response strategy.

Markwayne Mullin’s nomination as the new Homeland Security Secretary is subject to Senate confirmation. However, he could serve in an acting capacity under federal regulations governing executive branch vacancies until his official confirmation.
