“Cancer Rates Elevated in UK Coastal Areas”

Date:

Living in certain coastal areas increases the likelihood of cancer among UK residents, as per new maps revealing regions with elevated cancer rates. Approximately 3.5 million people in the UK are either living with cancer or in remission, with around 400,000 new cases reported annually. Data from the House of Commons Library pinpointed specific regions in England and Wales with the highest cancer diagnoses since 2003.

Coastal and rural areas tend to have higher numbers of cancer survivors, with areas like New Forest in South East and East Devon in the South West standing out for their high cancer rates. The prevalence of cancer in these areas is possibly linked to their aging populations, as age is a significant risk factor for cancer.

The top 10 neighborhoods with the highest cancer rates include six areas in New Forest, known for its high melanoma rates due to an older demographic and residents’ active outdoor lifestyle exposing them to UV light. For instance, New Milton West in New Forest and Sidmouth Sidford in East Devon have cancer rates of 8.44% and 8.40%, respectively, with a notable proportion of older residents.

Compared to other regions, New Milton West and Sidmouth Sidford have older populations, contributing to higher cancer rates. In contrast, Leeds City Centre has the lowest cancer prevalence at 0.5% due to its younger population. The data focuses on middle super output areas comprising 2,000 to 6,000 households and 5,000 to 15,000 people, reflecting cancer patients registered with GP practices since 2003.

The statistics do not include cancer-related deaths post-2003. Cancer Research UK’s senior health policy manager, Matt Sample, highlighted the variation in cancer prevalence across the UK, emphasizing the importance of addressing cancer for all demographics. The National Cancer Plan for England aims to improve early diagnosis, meet wait targets, and enhance treatment practices, emphasizing the need to support local health services in delivering tailored care.
