A ground-breaking underwater tunnel project estimated to cost £20 billion is poised to significantly reduce an eight-hour commute to a mere 40 minutes.
The ambitious Bohai Strait Tunnel in China is designed to stretch 123km (76 miles) through multiple fault zones. Planners are incorporating advanced earthquake-resistant technology and longitudinal ventilation shafts to ensure safety and air quality management along the extensive route.
Featuring numerous cross-passages and emergency refuge areas, the parallel tunnels are expected to extend approximately 80m below the sea floor. The total budget for the innovative venture stands at £20 billion, with Chinese authorities expressing eagerness to expedite the project.
Upon completion, the tunnel will surpass its counterparts in size and functionality. Running at speeds exceeding 150mph, the tunnel’s trains will significantly cut travel time between Dalian and Yantai by nearly 90%, outpacing the Eurostar trains operating in the Channel Tunnel.
Covering a submerged distance of 56 miles, the Bohai Strait Tunnel will exceed the combined lengths of the Channel Tunnel and the undersea portion of the Seikan Tunnel. The extensive project is estimated to conclude within 10 to 15 years, with the first train anticipated to operate in the late 2030s or later.
Both Dalian and Yantai, the tunnel’s terminal cities, are vital industrial centers. Dalian has evolved into a prominent financial, shipping, and logistics hub in East Asia, while Yantai has witnessed growth in petrochemicals, automotive manufacturing, and tech sectors.
Currently, the quickest link between the two cities is the Bohai Train Ferry, requiring approximately eight hours to cross the strait. The tunnel’s construction aims to bolster economic output and enhance transport networks in China.
Experts anticipate that the tunnel will alleviate pressure on existing railways and improve connectivity between industrial zones. Despite criticism from environmental advocates regarding wildlife habitats, the project aims to incorporate nature reserves within identified construction areas.
