Police have made a grim discovery in the search for a missing five-year-old girl in the Australian outback. Authorities have confirmed the discovery of a body believed to be that of the missing child.
The young girl, who has been referred to as Kumanjayi Little Baby by her family following her tragic death, disappeared late on Saturday night from a residence on the outskirts of Alice Springs, located in the Australian outback.
In Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, it is customary to avoid naming the deceased out of respect and cultural beliefs, as it is thought to disturb the spirit and hinder their journey to the afterlife.
Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole delivered the heartbreaking news during a press briefing, describing the finding as “an incredibly distressing development.” He stated that the body of a young Aboriginal girl, believed to be the missing five-year-old, was located by search party members.
A manhunt is currently ongoing for 47-year-old Jefferson Lewis, who was released from prison just six days before the girl’s disappearance and is suspected of abducting her. Assistant Commissioner Peter Malley emphasized that the primary focus of the investigation is to locate Jefferson Lewis, urging the public to assist in his apprehension.
The tragic update follows five days of extensive search efforts conducted by authorities and volunteers in the Northern Territory near the area where the five-year-old was last seen at Old Timers Camp. Witnesses reported seeing Lewis with the girl late at night on the day of her disappearance, leading to suspicions of his involvement in her disappearance.
Search operations, involving over 60 individuals, helicopters, drones, and various resources, have covered approximately 46 square kilometers by air and an additional 20 square kilometers on foot. Indigenous trackers have also been enlisted to aid in the search efforts, with the assistance of volunteers and land councils.
The community remains in shock and mourning as the investigation into this tragic incident continues.
